Deputy Director, Uganda

The Need

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking an experienced leader to join IJM's fight against the systemic abuse of widows and orphans left destitute from the coercive and often violent theft of their land and primary source of survival. The Deputy Director, under the supervision of the Field Office Director (FOD), will lead the team's collaborative casework and structural transformation programs to combat this violent abuse of power and to transform Uganda's developing public justice structures to ensure the protection of law for vulnerable widows and orphans. The Deputy Director will be groomed for future leadership of new IJM field office programs around the world.

Responsibilities

Attain Structural Transformation

  • Lead and manage the design and successful implementation of a cooperative plan to transform key pillars of the public justice system so that the justice system provides accessible and sustainable protection of law to vulnerable widows and orphans;
  • Secure, through networking and advocacy, the requisite demand, political will, endorsement and resources from key government and non-government partners, stakeholders and donors for the implementation of the cooperative plan to accomplish Structural Transformation;
  • Design and implement rigorous systems and processes for effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting of IJM Uganda's Structure Transformation activities and programming; and
  • Effectively market and represent IJM Uganda's programs to key constituents and stakeholders.

Achieve Casework Objectives

  • Lead and manage IJM-assisted casework interventions in Central and Northern Uganda to ensure that widows and orphans are rescued from violent and coercive land grabbing and that perpetrators of such abuse are held accountable under law;
  • Build relationships of mutual trust and benefit with key government and non-government actors to ensure holistic care and protection of IJM clients consistent with the law and best practices;
  • Design, implement, monitor and evaluate strategies and best practices for effective IJM-assisted intervention on behalf of victims of illegal land grabbing; and
  • Design and implement rigorous systems for effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting of IJM Uganda's casework activities and programming.

Develop National Leaders

  • Provide sound spiritual leadership and mentoring to IJM staff;
  • Serve as a model of servant leadership for IJM staff;
  • Develop, monitor and evaluate concrete performance and leadership development objectives for IJM staff; and
  • Provide regular feedback and evaluation to IJM staff regarding their performance and leadership development.

Ensure Stewardship of IJM Resources

  • Assist in developing strategic plans and budgets;
  • Ensure spending of allocated funds in accordance with IJM's budgetary and stewardship principles;
  • Ensure compliance with all IJM policies and best practices; and
  • Ensure that the office is compliance with all relevant laws.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Graduate degree – MBA or attorney with significant litigation experience preferred;
  • Strong research and writing skills;
  • Minimum of two years of successful management/team building experience;
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights and social justice;
  • Experience working with government and institutional grants preferred; and
  • Prior Peace Corps, Relief/Development NGO, or other overseas work experience preferred.

Relocation/Travel Requirements

  • This position requires full-time residence in Kampala, Uganda, with regular travel to Northern Uganda and periodic travel to other parts of Africa and to the United States.
