Conchita*'s story: Guatemala
When Conchita's mother discovered that an Irish national who had moved to their small Guatemalan town had been molesting her 10-year-old daughter, she immediately took a complaint to the local authorities. But in an underfunded and slow-moving justice system, obstacles abounded. IJM investigative staff worked with the police to ensure the arrest of the suspect, and legal staff sought justice in court; the perpetrator was convicted and sentenced to four years in jail. Today, Conchita lives with her loving family and continues therapy to deal with the lasting effects of the abuse. She remains in close contact with IJM Guatemala staff.
