Aftercare Specialist - Rwanda

The Mission

The mission of the International Justice Mission (IJM) is to protect people from violent forces of injustice by securing rescue and restoration for victims and ensuring public justice systems work for the poor.

The Need

IJM is a dynamic and highly professional organization that is experiencing rapid growth and an ever-increasing volume of casework. The new IJM Field Office in Kigali, Rwanda is seeking to hire a candidate with significant experience with significant experience in counseling and social work to provide psychological counseling and to facilitate other aftercare services for victims of human rights abuses, in particular, widows and orphans victimized by property grabbing and women and children who are victims of sexual violence.

Responsibilities

The Aftercare Specialist will provide ongoing psychological counseling and will facilitate provision of other aftercare services for IJM clients. Specifically, the Aftercare Specialist’s duties will include the following:

  • Meet with IJM clients to evaluate their aftercare needs, including the following: (1) psychosocial/emotional health; (2) physical health; (3) spiritual health; (4) safety and security; (5) basic needs (emergency food, housing, clothing, etc); (6) community reintegration; (7) economic self sufficiency; (8) life skills; (9) children’s education; and (10) overall well being;
  • Create and implement holistic aftercare treatment plans for each client, serving in a case management role;
  • Ensure that clients receive the necessary psychological counseling recommended in their treatment plans (including by providing counseling services directly, and by arranging counseling services with outside providers);
  • In order to ensure that clients receive the other aftercare services recommended in their treatment plans, refer clients to other social service providers as appropriate and coordinate provision of services;
  • Assist in developing a network of partner organizations able to serve IJM clients;
  • Assist the legal team in interviewing victims and preparing victims for legal proceedings;
  • Provide ongoing support and encouragement to clients with regard to their cases, including by accompanying victims to court and other important proceedings;
  • Respond to immediate crises affecting client safety, with guidance from the Aftercare Manager;
  • Document all IJM aftercare casework;
  • Coordinate quarterly IJM staff trainings that enhance staff’s ability to provide client-focused intervention, or that address issues of self care;
  • Participate in office-wide programs addressing the staff care of IJM staff and spiritual formation;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Field Office Director and/or Aftercare Manager, Rwanda; and
  • Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
Skills and Experience
  • University degree in Social Work, psychology or related field, or equivalent qualification;
  • Minimum of three years’ experience providing counseling and/or psychotherapy;
  • Graduate studies or additional certifications in counseling and/or psychotherapy preferred;
  • Work experience and knowledge in assisting vulnerable women and children highly desirable;
  • Experience networking with International and National NGO’s, CBO’s, faith-based communities and local government preferred;
  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda required; and
  • Knowledge of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook; typing skills.
