The Mission

The mission of International Justice Mission is to protect people from violent forces of injustice by securing rescue and restoration for victims and ensuring public justice systems work for the poor.

The Need

IJM is a dynamic and highly professional organization that is experiencing rapid growth and an ever-increasing volume of casework. The IJM office in Kolkata, India is seeking to hire an Advocate to manage and litigate an active caseload of criminal cases throughout West Bengal, as well as research and write extensively on issues of procedure, evidence and substantive law. This position is based in Kolkata, West Bengal, but requires some travel throughout India.

Responsibilities
  • Fully understand relevant laws and judicial procedures;
  • Prepare written briefs, memoranda and arguments for various courts, with well-researched authorities;
  • Develop and implement strategic litigation plans for each case;
  • Manage multiple cases in various jurisdictions simultaneously;
  • Appear in various courts to prosecute police initiated and private complaint cases;
  • Work with the investigative team to build strong criminal cases against perpetrators;
  • Work with the aftercare to ensure clients receive proper safeguard and care;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local contacts, the bar and government leaders;
  • Timely, concisely and thoroughly provide written reports of all activities;
  • Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information;
  • Comply with all laws and ethical cannons; and
  • Carry out an additional portfolio of assignments given by the Department Head.
Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of two years experience in litigation; criminal litigation experience preferred;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law or beyond;
  • Proven ability to conduct excellent legal research and produce compelling oral and written legal arguments;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, Windows 2000 and Windows XP; and
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques; experience with various government social service programs and NGOs working in West Bengal is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Bengali; ability to speak and write Hindi preferred.
