Field Office Internships - Open Positions

Internship positions require participation in the IJM Training Week every January, June, and September at IJM’s headquarters in the Washington, D.C. Participants will deploy to their field office assignments no later than one month following Training Week.

Please periodically check this page for updates. Positions and specific job descriptions are subject to change due to the evolving needs of IJM offices. Candidates are strongly encouraged to be open to as many placement options as possible, especially when positions are available at more than one field office. All of these positions require a minimum 6 month commitment; however, most require a 9-12 month commitment.

General Qualifications and Required Skills for all Interns

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Professional behavior and communication, both written and oral
  • Organizational and administrative skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Software and Windows XP strongly preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish required for Latin America offices
  • Fluency in French preferred but not required for Rwanda offices

IJM’s Field Office Internships vary every semester and look different in every field office. Specific job responsibilities for each available type of internship are noted below.

Administrative Intern Responsibilities

Administrative Interns often assist a specific person or team. For example, you may work as an Executive Assistant to your Field Office Director or assist the legal, investigation or aftercare team in the field office. These positions involve the following tasks and responsibilities as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Field Office Director.

  • Assist in the overall organizational development through forming and implementing office policies
  • Publish and/or present data on office policies, procedures, and strategies
  • Review and proof documents, records, and forms for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to applicable policies
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and casework materials
  • Provide general office organization and assistance
  • Assist with computers and general information systems for the office

  • Cambodia: 12 months
  • Manila (Accounting emphasis): 12 months
Communications Intern Responsibilities

These positions involve the tasks and responsibilities described below as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Field Office Director. Please note that these positions will look different in every location. In some offices, the internship may be completely Communications related. In others, the position will involve both Communications and Community Relations responsibilities.

  • Identify and develop stories and news items on IJM programs for materials such as: IJM Justice Briefings, Quarterly Reports, web updates, fundraising pieces, PowerPoint presentations, and IJM speeches.
  • Check facts and use research skills to help put IJM work into regional and global context.
  • Draft press releases after significant events for local media.
  • Maintain a file containing articles in newspapers and internet of interest.
  • Conduct field research and write issue-focused stories to highlight IJM’s work.
  • Research, compile and analyze information of use for the office in the area of communications.
  • Arrange interviews and establish contacts with entities, civil servants, and social/media operators etc.
  • Developing documents based on studies, surveys, and interviews of information subjects.
  • Other responsibilities to be discussed with the Director.

Investigations Intern Responsibilities

These positions involve the below described tasks and responsibilities as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Field Office Directors. These positions involve supporting and assisting the investigations team.

  • Assist with writing and editing reports of investigation activities.
  • Organize and track progress of ongoing operations, including the operation stage and expenses incurred for each operation.
  • Create intelligence reports that organize and analyze data.
  • Assist in the development of protocols, procedure, and best practices for the Investigations department.
  • Assist with organizing, administering, and documenting ongoing training in Investigations.
  • Research future equipment needs and purchases; operate and maintain investigative equipment.
  • Facilitate investigations through logistical support as needed.

Information Systems Intern Responsibilities

Information Systems interns participate in supporting local staff in a variety of their IT needs. This is a great opportunity for a Christian technology person to get exposure to a fairly advanced, very disparate, IT Operation. Although tasks vary depending on the nature of the work in progress during the internship, depending on skills, interns can expect their tasks to include:

  • Building of new laptops/desktops,
  • Handling user issues in the field,
  • Supporting and training national staff in IT issues, and
  • Involvement in development of specific projects at the direction of Headquarters IS department

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Experience in Microsoft products such as Office, XP, Vista and ideally SharePoint.
  • Recent graduates, and graduate students with some classes in Information Technology

Community and Church Relations Intern Responsibilities

Community and Church Relations Interns assist the church relations and/or communication teams. These positions involve the following tasks and responsibilities as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Supervisor or Field Office Director.

  • Secure opportunities for IJM to conduct training for churches, community leaders and the general population;
  • Develop and deliver sound theological messages on the biblical call of justice to churches;
  • Network/develop key relationships with denominational leaders, civic leaders and pastors;
  • Work with existing partnerships in your field office;
  • Track monthly targets and maintain reporting dashboard;
  • Maintain promotional materials inventory and ledger;
  • Provide administrative support to Director of Community Relations.

IJM UK Affiliate Office Internship
Administration/Communication

IJM UK is one of our affiliate offices located about an hour outside London, England. This intern will be located in our IJM UK office. This position will involve both administrative tasks and communication projects. This position will involve the following tasks and responsibilities as well as other relevant duties assigned by the staff.

  1. Assist in the UK office with offering office support;
  2. Assist with newsletter mail shots and web site management;
  3. Assist the Projects Assistant with campaigns to churches, resourcing the volunteer cohort;
  4. Assist with UK’s justice briefing newsletter and e-marketing; and
  5. Work as a liaison with speaking requests, attending exhibitions where IJM UK has a stall, networking into University groups to arrange speakers.
