IJM's Bethany Hoang, Holly Burkhalter, and Gary Haugen deliver letter with 7,200 signatures to Josh Dubois.

IJM President Gary Haugen, accompanied by Holly Burkhalter and Bethany Hoang, visited the White House on Friday, February 27, to deliver a letter to President Obama signed by 7,200 IJM constituents. The letter calls upon President Obama to make the abolition of sexual violence, trafficking and slavery a priority in his Administration. In particular, we encouraged him to designate foreign assistance for the development of public justice systems in poor countries that will respond effectively to violence and exploitation of the poor.

The IJM delegation was warmly received by Joshua Dubois, the newly-named director of the White House Office for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Gary Haugen made a point of encouraging Mr. Dubois to enlarge the mandate of his office to address international human rights issues, including the abolition of modern day slavery and sex trafficking. Currently the mandate of the office is largely domestic, including poverty eradication and promotion of responsible fatherhood.

Congress Approves Higher Budget for Anti-Trafficking Office

We are pleased to learn that both the House and Senate have approved an increase for the State Department Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP). IJM works closely with the TIP office, which is responsible for issuing an annual report on foreign governments’ initiatives to end trafficking and slavery. The TIP office also makes grants to anti-trafficking organizations, including IJM. Last year, for example, TIP provided a grant to support IJM’s anti-trafficking work in Manila.

Congress appropriated $22 million for the TIP office – an increase of almost $6 million over President Bush’s request for 2009. Increased funding of the TIP office in the next budget cycle remains a priority for IJM. Given the enormous need for victim assistance and perpetrator apprehension and prosecution around the world, TIP’s budget should continue to grow.

IJM "Justice Campaigns" Plans Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

IJM looks forward to the arrival of 75 Christian human rights advocates who will join our staff and interns in visiting approximately 90 Congressional offices on March 30, 2009. This is our first-ever Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill with our friends from around the country. Hill visits will be preceded by an advocacy training session on Sunday, March 29, following IJM’s annual Global Prayer Gathering.
