Positions for January 2009 Training and Deployment Period

These positions require participation in the IJM Training Week held January 11-16, 2009 at IJM’s headquarters in the Washington, DC area prior to deployment to the field office assignment.

Please periodically check this page for updates. Positions and specific job descriptions are subject to change due to the evolving needs of IJM offices. Candidates are strongly encouraged to be open to as many placement options as possible, especially when positions are available at more than one field office.

Aftercare Fellowship

Job Responsibilities

Aftercare fellowships will involve most if not all of the following responsibilities. Other relevant duties will be assigned by the Field Office Directors.

  • Conduct research and impact assessments on how IJM interventions affect IJM clients
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with aftercare providers
  • Draft best practices for rehabilitation and reintegration of IJM clients
  • Coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of aftercare home projects
  • Travel with IJM staff to meet with IJM clients and work with area leaders
  • Assist in the continued development of a comprehensive aftercare strategy for IJM

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Master’s degree in social work or equivalent experience strongly preferred
  • Experience or exposure to program design and development
  • Training or experience in counseling
  • Experience addressing poverty and livelihood issues
  • Experience working with young victims of sexual abuse or other abuse
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred for Latin American offices

Legal Fellowship

Job Responsibilities

Legal fellowships will involve most if not all of the following responsibilities. Other relevant duties will be assigned by the Field Office Directors.

  • Research legal issues and write briefs that will assist in rescuing and protecting victims of trafficking and forced labor
  • Assist in developing best practice documents based on casework experience
  • Assist with legal training sessions
  • Input case details into Casemap Software Program
  • Participate in legal strategy meetings
  • Attend trial hearings and meeting with government officials
  • Participate in rescue planning sessions
  • Travel to the field with National Staff as required

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Law school graduate
  • Background practice in law not required, but preferred
  • Ability to communicate in French is helpful for the Rwanda Field Office, but not required.

Communications Internship/Fellowship

Job Responsibilities

Legal fellowships will involve most if not all of the following responsibilities. Other relevant duties will be assigned by the Field Office Directors.

  • Serve as an internal, entrepreneurial “news reporter” to capture the stories and news items that describe the work of IJM
  • Identify and develop stories and news items on IJM programs to be used for a variety of mediums. Check facts and use research skills to help put IJM work into regional and global context
  • Build relationships with key local media; create and maintain press release list with local and national newspapers and magazines
  • Conduct calls or travel, as needed, to meet with IJM field staff to gather stories and news items
  • Travel to the field to conduct victim interviews and document their stories through photography and video, acting as IJM’s documentary filmmaker

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • College graduate
  • Prior experience in communications
  • Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Windows XP strongly preferred
  • Experience networking with International and National NGO’s, CBO’s, faith-based communities and local government
  • Oral fluency in Spanish strongly preferred for Latin America offices

Business Relations Fellowship

Job Responsibilities

The Business Relations Fellowship will involve most, if not all of the following responsibilities. Other relevant duties will be assigned by the Field Office Director.

  • Develop a strategy to increase the awareness of sex trafficking within the local business community in Cebu
  • Mobilize local business stakeholders in providing job placements for IJM clients with the following target industries: food, clothing, hotel and tourism, cosmetology, business process outsourcing, facilities management, and fashion accessories
  • Conduct a survey and analysis of corporate social responsibility programs within IJM’s target industries in Cebu
  • Organize business stakeholder meetings as a form for socially-minded businesses to learn more about partnership opportunities with IJM and other anti-trafficking organizations

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Masters Degree in Business Administration plus business development and management experience OR
  • Bachelors Degree in a relevant field plus extensive business development and management experience
  • Experience with social enterprise development preferred

Field Office Internships

Job Responsibilities

IJM’s Field Office Internships vary every semester and involve work in Communications, Church Mobilization, Community Relations, Administration, Research, and Investigation Analysis. Responsibilities of Field Office Interns may include:

  • Assist in the overall organizational development through forming and implementing office policies
  • Participate in meetings between Department heads and the Field Office Director
  • Attend government meetings to assist in advocacy for victim relief and perpetrator accountability
  • Assist investigations in drafting preliminary reports and follow-up reports which summarize intelligence gathered by operatives
  • Publish and/or present data on office policies, procedures, and strategies
  • Train national staff on database maintenance and data entry to ensure continued accuracy and usefulness
  • Review and proof documents, records, and forms for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to applicable policies

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Professional in behavior and communication, both written and oral
  • Organizational and administrative skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Software and Windows XP strongly preferred
  • Oral fluency in Spanish required for Latin America offices
