  • After being challenged at a leadership conference to support an organization doing work around the world, the students at Hampton Christian High School began raising funds for IJM. First, they began by selling freedom links around campus. These freedom links represented the chains of slavery and were displayed in their main hallway as the ‘Wall of Freedom.’ They also hosted a talent show and coin drive competition. In total, they raised over $3,500 for the work of justice!
  • Renee Jones, a youth leader for Immanuel Lutheran Church led her group through IJM’s youth curriculum, The Justice Mission. Renee’s hope in using the curriculum was that her students would be exposed to the realities of oppression and inspired to act upon the violence being committed against the poor and the vulnerable.
  • In the past few years, youth leader Mike Emerson and a group of students from the Five Pines Live youth group have organized an annual Run for Justice. Having been educated about the injustice that exists in our world and the ways IJM is seeking to combat it, students organized the run and gathered sponsorships from individuals, businesses and churches in their area. They also took the message of IJM to twenty-one other local youth groups, understanding that raising awareness and raising financial support go hand in hand.
  • Over the past few years, small groups in the youth ministry at University Covenant Church have been doing various projects to help raise awareness about justice issues and raise money for IJM. A group of 15 eighth-grade boys learned about injustice and the work of IJM through The Justice Mission and challenged themselves to do work projects throughout the community for an entire year so that others could be freed from forced labor. Eight months and ten major work projects later, the students had raised $1225 for the work of IJM. Projects ranged from raking leaves to hauling stones to cleaning gutters to washing cars to washing dishes (for 370 people!) to digging to doing dump runs. The students, who normally would rather be playing video games than working, willingly got dirty and sweaty for the benefit of others.
  • After completing The Justice Mission curriculum, this youth group began speaking in various Sunday School classes about slavery, the work of IJM and the Loose Change to Loosen Chains (LC2LC) campaign. In total, nine other schools and churches decided to join their LC2LC drive. The campaign lasted for four months, ending with a “Rock for Justice.” This concert event included bands, guest speakers and an art event which allowed students with all varieties of skills and passions to be involved with the work. This group of only 21 young people was able to reach over 1,000 students between all of the schools and churches and the campaign raised over $13,000! Their Loose Change campaign has now become an annual event.
High school and middle school students have the power to be a voice for the oppressed and stand on behalf of victims of injustice. IJM has created powerful tools for youth pastors and leaders to teach about God’s heart for justice and to equip youth to take action.

Loose Change to Loosen Chains
Loose Change to Loosen Chains

Loose Change to Loosen Chains (LC2LC) is a student-led campaign for elementary to college students to combat modern-day slavery while learning about the reality of injustices today. According to Real Simple magazine there is $10.5 billion in loose change lying around American households. Imagine what you could do if you were to collect even just a fraction of this amount and use it for a good cause!

IJM will use the money donated through this program to rescue victims of slavery and other forms of oppression. You can order LC2LC logoed cups to collect change and build awareness for the campaign.

Also, consider using our latest documentary films in conjunction with this campaign as a way to educate your communities. Read more about the films here.
