Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson has featured IJM Zambia in his column this week, highlighting the office’s work to seek “justice for the poorest.” After visiting Africa and seeing the Zambia team at work, Gerson has explored the way that IJM’s legal casework and community trainings are contributing to structural changes, as Zambians begin to expect their legal systems to provide protection from illegal land seizure and sexual violence. Even the small victories of simply enforcing existing laws can encourage broader social change, as the possibility of justice gradually becomes an expectation of justice.Gerson shares the story of Zilose, a widow in her early 40s and a current client of IJM Zambia. After Zilose’s husband died, his relatives attempted to strip Zilose of her property and force her from her home. IJM was able to intervene, ensuring that Zilose had legal representation, as well as access to vital health care and job training. Now she lives in security as IJM pursues her case in court.
