IJM Kenya: After A Year And A Day In Prison, Joseph Is Finally Declared Innocent

Fri, 05/18/2012

NAIROBI, KENYA – Today, after spending exactly one year and one day in prison for a crime he had not committed, Joseph was set free.

Last year, Joseph stepped off a matutu – a mini-bus used for public transportation – and stepped into some kind of public brawl. Suddenly, Joseph was hit by a stone. The next thing he knew, the man who threw the rock was accusing Joseph of stealing his phone. Police nearby overheard, and suddenly the mob turned on Joseph. Joseph still had no idea what was going on.

Both Joseph and the man who had thrown the stone were taken to prison.

Fri, 05/18/2012

CHENNAI, INDIA – This week, IJM assisted government officials to rescue 16 children, women and men from a rice mill.

Three years ago, IJM helped local authorities with an operation on the same rice mill to free a different group of forced labor slaves. When the rescue team arrived on Tuesday, the rice mill owner was not present because he was in court facing charges for the previous offense.

A dozen people received official release certificates, emancipating them from slavery in the rice mill and entitling them to government rehabilitation funds.

MUKONO, UGANDA – Rebecca’s wedding day is one like many woman dream of: beautiful flowers, a packed church and a stunning white dress. This bride is nearly 70, but sits regally in her finery like a woman half her age.

In fact, just two seats down, there is a woman half her age in another white dress. And two more next to her. There are four veils, four bouquets and four grooms smiling by their sides.

April 16, 2012 might be my all-time favorite day this year.  My colleagues Annick and Tim and I met at Dunkin Donuts on Capitol Hill at 7:00 am and picked up several dozen donuts and some boxes of coffee, packed them in Tim’s Jeep and drove to a nearby church where we set up tables and spread out breakfast.  Within an hour, 2 giant buses arrived from across town carrying over 160 IJM volunteer advocates, who had been in D.C.
