NAIROBI, KENYA – On Friday afternoon, an IJM lawyer in Kenya received a much-anticipated phone call: The man who had been charged with sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl was convicted, after significant advocacy from IJM’s legal team.

The conviction secures justice for Bethany*, who was sexually assaulted by her landlord two years ago. Since the incident, Bethany has completed Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and is in school. IJM helped her mother start a business selling fish so that Bethany and her younger brother will have a stable home and strong future.

The minimum sentence for the landlord’s conviction is 10 years in prison, and the court will issue a sentence later this week.
