IJM Kenya: Three Innocent Men Released from Prison After 850 Days

NAIROBI, KENYA – After spending over two years in a Nairobi jail – falsely imprisoned for a crime they never committed – Benson, Victor and Francis were finally freed last month.

Two years ago, a police officer was attacked and had his rifle stolen by assailants he could not identify. The other police officers who had been with him at the time of the robbery were determined to save face and quickly report that the crime was solved.

Benson and Victor were the first two men who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

IJM Cambodia: Former Chief of Police Convicted of Trafficking Crimes in Historic Ruling

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – In a landmark case that will echo throughout trafficking rings around the capital city of Cambodia, the former chief of the Phnom Penh Municipal Anti Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Police was found guilty as an accomplice to aggravated procurement of prostitution. Yesterday, he and three other perpetrators were convicted for trafficking crimes, all sentenced to at least seven years in prison.

The former chief is the first police officer from an anti-trafficking unit to ever be convicted of a trafficking in persons crime.

IJM Trains Police on Investigating and Combatting Trafficking in Mumbai

MUMBAI, INDIA – "You have come alongside us rescued girls, and most importantly, you have helped us fulfill our dreams." The young woman who spoke confidently stood before 34 police officers in uniform. The officers were gathered for an IJM-led training on the law and procedures for cases of commercial sexual exploitation.

Last year, this young woman was rescued from a brothel in an operation by local police and IJM. She continued: "Today, I speak on behalf of the girls who are still in darkness and long for justice, and who wish to come out. They are waiting expectantly for you.

Landmark Conviction Secured by IJM Rwanda

KIGALI, RWANDA – This week, a Rwandan judge sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. IJM staff called Carol* and her mother right away to share news of the conviction – the longest ever in an IJM Rwanda case. The perpetrator was also ordered to pay damages to Carol, fined under both the civil and criminal cases.

"This is a huge win for Carol, for girls across Rwanda who have experienced sexual violence, and for IJM" explains IJM Rwanda Director Lane Mears.
