India: IJM, Partners Rescue More Than 30 From Life Of Slavery, Squalor

CHENNAI, INDIA – After decades living and working in an abusive, inhumane catfish farm, more than 30 people were set free this week, including children and two pregnant women. On the farm, the slaves were forced to wade into man-made pools to harvest catfish, baiting them with maggot-infested chicken carcasses.

IJM worked with a local partner, Association for Rural Development (ARD), to investigate the farm, located three or four hours outside Chennai.

IJM Chennai: Desperate Call from Slave Trapped in Brick Factory Leads to Freedom for 50

CHENNAI, INDIA – IJM Chennai got a call on a Tuesday afternoon. The caller was trapped in a brick factory, desperate for help. Another woman who was enslaved in the factory was critically ill. The factory owner was refusing to let her get medical help. "If you don't come tonight," the caller said, "she will die."

Barely Surviving

IJM had learned that about 50 people were confined to the brick factory, ranging from 6 months to 65 years old. Children as young as 14 years old were forced to work long hours, doing back-breaking work molding and carrying bricks.

IJM Rwanda: Man Convicted for Assaulting 11-Year-Old Girl with Disability

KIGALI, RWANDA – A Rwandan court's decision brought swift justice for 11-year-old Clarice* and her family. Just three weeks after she was raped, the man who attacked her has been found guilty by the court and sent to prison, where he can never hurt more children.

Clarice was especially vulnerable: a young girl, living with a mental disability and largely unable to communicate. On April 3, an older neighbor lured her into the woods and violently raped her. A woman passing by saw the assault and reported it to local leaders.

IJM Rwanda: Justice Secured for 16-Year-Old Aveline

KIGALI, RWANDA – When she was 16, Aveline* found a job as a house helper for a family in Kigali, Rwanda's capital city. Putting school on hold, she worked hard to send money home to her family. But her promising job took a horrible turn: The man who employed her raped Aveline three times in as many months.

Aveline was scared and hurt, but she found the courage to report the abuse to local authorities. Police arrested the man, and local health workers connected Aveline to IJM for the legal help she desperately needed.
