IJM Kolkata, Police Rescue Bangladeshi Girls Just In Time

KOLKATA, INDIA – When IJM Kolkata got the call from the city police after business hours on May 8, the team knew they had to mobilize quickly: Alleged traffickers were traveling through India by public bus with two girls from Bangladesh. If they moved fast enough, there was a chance they could rescue the girls before the traffickers had the opportunity to sell them.

Two IJM caseworkers left their homes immediately to meet police at a bus stop downtown. Police had arrived just in time to stop the bus, and they interviewed the suspects traveling with two Bangladeshi girls.

IJM Cambodia: 3 Brothels Closed, Sex Trafficking Survivors Now Free

PHONM PENH, CAMBODIA – A police officer spoke to a small band of young women and teenage girls. It was after midnight. Just a few hours earlier, General Sun Ro had led his team of police and IJM support staff to rescue these young women from a brothel where they had been sold and exploited for sex.

"You are now no longer oppressed," General Sun Ro began, urging the young women to take advantage of the opportunities, vocational training programs and aftercare services available to them as sex trafficking survivors. He encouraged them to think and dream about their life in a new way.

Uganda: 5 Convictions in One Month - A 'Sea Change' for Vulnerable Communities

KAMPALA, UGANDA – This April, five criminals were convicted in Ugandan courts for stealing land and homes from vulnerable orphans. IJM Uganda worked closely with local police and prosecutors, and now 12 orphans have had their rights to land restored. Several are now adults with their own families.

IJM has beeng helping widows and orphans in Uganda since 2008, but seeing this many strong verdicts in one month is "unprecedented," according to Field Office Director Jesse Rudy, who added that the importance of each conviction "cannot be overstated."

IJM Bolivia Celebrates A Big Milestone: Rocío’s Kindergarten Graduation

EL ALTO, BOLIVIA – When 5-year-old Rocío* scanned the crowd gathered for her kindergarten graduation, she saw several members of the audience who had come especially to celebrate her: Her mother; Roxana, an IJM Bolivia social worker; and Jeshika, an assistant with the aftercare team.

Rocío has grown close to the IJM staff over the last year. She meets regularly with her social worker Roxana for trauma-focused therapy, and the little girl is learning how to have a strong future.

IJM Manila: Australian Doctor Convicted for Sexually Assaulting Six 12- to 15-Year-Old Boys

MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES – After a 3-year trial, an Australian doctor working in Manila with the World Health Organization was found guilty for sexually abusing six Filipino boys. He was also convicted on sex trafficking charges and faces a combined sentence of 10 to 62 years in prison for both criminal cases.

The Philippine National Police contacted IJM in 2009, after they arrested the doctor in the act of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy.
