Brave Trafficking Survivor Leads IJM, Mumbai Police To Find Girls Trapped In Brothel

Mon, 06/17/2013

MUMBAI, INDIA – Sani* knows what it is like to be trapped, literally trapped, in darkness. Sani was trafficked and sold to a brothel in Mumbai's massive red-light district, where she was sold to men and raped, night after night. She was hidden behind locked doors and in secret compartments where she wouldn't be found unless she was "needed."

But earlier this year, IJM helped rescue Sani from the nightmare. And just three months later, Sani helped rescue other girls who had been trapped just like her.

KOLKATA, INDIA – Despite monsoon rains that threatened to halt an already-rescheduled anti-trafficking operation, IJM helped Kolkata Police rescue one girl from a brothel yesterday. Traffic resulting from the downpour slowed the rescue team, but when IJM and police arrived at the rescue site, everything went according to plan.

Police and two IJM social workers and a lawyer went straight to the room where they believed the girl was being held. They immediately found her in the tiny, closet-sized room.

IJM Bangalore: After 13 Years In Slavery, Families Freed From Brutal Rock Quarry

Fri, 06/07/2013

BANGALORE, INDIA – Yesterday, 19 people were rescued from a brutal rock quarry. They had been trapped there for 13 years, confined to live and work in miserable conditions. The manual labor was intense and exhausting. They were not allowed to leave the quarry, and several women even had to give birth in dirty sheds in the quarry compound. They were slaves in every sense of the word.

The rock quarry is located in a rural area, in a district where IJM Bangalore has not worked much in the past.
