IJM Kolkata mobilized within five minutes to respond to a call from the police, requesting assistance with an anti-trafficking operation at a small brothel.

KOLKATA, INDIA – Five minutes after they received a call from Kolkata police, IJM social workers and a lawyer were in a car and on their way to the brothel. The city police had conducted a successful anti-trafficking operation at the brothel operating out of a private residence, and they called IJM for assistance with critical follow-up.

The madam inside the home was arrested during the operation, as she is suspected of managing the brothel where girls were trafficked for sexual exploitation. At least one of the young women rescued from the small brothel is underage, and she will receive the care she needs in an aftercare home for trafficking survivors.

IJM Kolkata Field Office Director Biju Mathew said, "We are very proud of our team for mobilizing so quickly." He added praise for the local law enforcement and said that the operation was "a massive success and a strong indication of the proactivity of the Kolkata Police Department."
