Today, a man accused of violently stealing the land, livestock and livelihood from a poor Ugandan widow sits behind bars. Exactly one month after opening its doors, IJM Gulu worked with local police to secure their first arrest together in a violent property grabbing case.
NAIROBI, KENYA – Nelly’s mother chatted anxiously with other parents in the courtroom, waiting patiently for the judge to return. After three full years on their daughters’ case, one more, long day seemed well worth the wait. On this day, Nelly* and five other young girls could receive justice.
NAIROBI, KENYA: The crime was brutal – a group of school friends violently robbed by a gang, two of the young girls raped. IJM Kenya took on the case, working tirelessly to secure justice for Etana* and Mara.* But as the months went by and three of the four men in the gang were acquitted, justice seemed cruelly out of reach.
NAIROBI, KENYA: IJM attorneys felt the mood in the courtroom change abruptly. When the judge read the verdict against the man who raped Amani,* fear turned to surprise – and joy. Despite the perpetrator's attempts to distort the truth, he was convicted. Justice had been done for 15-year-old Amani and her family.
Over a year ago, Amani was walking home from school alone. Suddenly, her uncle grabbed her and forced her into a nearby forest. He raped her and threatened to hurt his young niece if she told anyone. Scared for her life, Amani kept her pain to herself for five long days.
