Undercover Rescue Operation Frees 18 in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC — It was a typical Wednesday afternoon at a private house party in the Dominican Republic, the most-visited destination in the Caribbean. But moments after someone announced, “Let’s have the wine,” police stormed through the door.

The party was over—and 18 young women who had been trafficked there were set free. Fourteen were minors.

New Study in the Dominican Republic: 1 in 10 Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation are Children

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINCAN REPUBLIC -- A cutting-edge study recently released by International Justice Mission reveals that 1 in 10 victims of commercial sexual exploitation in the Dominican Republic are children. 

While many think of trafficking as abuse that takes place in brothels or bars, much of the trafficking in the Dominican is street-based, with pimps and traffickers selling children right out in the open. In fact, the study found nearly 1 in 4 commercial sex workers found on street corners, parks and beaches to be under 18 years old.

Guatemalan School Principal Sentenced to Nearly 90 Years

GUATEMALA CITY – An elementary school principal has been sentenced to nearly 90 years in prison for sexually assaulting seven fifth-grade boys under his care. The verdict was announced on December 29, 2014, and it brought IJM’s 200th trial to a close in Guatemala.

Principal abuses his authority to assault fifth-graders 

The abuse took place over several months in 2013—sometimes on campus, other times on field trips. The principal threatened the boys to keep them quiet about the heinous assaults.
