The Need
IJM is seeking an Associate, Communications and Media to develop and distribute compelling story content and key messages in both Khmer and English for national, regional and global audiences. This role is responsible for initiating an effective and efficient communications plan to amplify the impact of IJM Cambodia’s progress and success in labor trafficking, increase buy-in to IJM’s model and theory of change, and deliver communications that empower survivors and give them a strong voice to activate change. The role is also responsible for more complex, urgent or crucial translation projects to enable leaders and other staff to work effectively within the project.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Arts/Humanities, Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field, or equivalent work experience;
- Three years’ professional experience in story writing, internal messaging development and editing desirable;
- Portfolio of excellent published work that demonstrates expertise, creativity and ability to fit varying audiences;
- Experience coordinating or managing communications or storytelling projects desirable;
- Experience working and networking with the media an advantage;
- Experience in Khmer-English translation of legal/technical text, and real-time oral translation in meetings and speaking engagements required.
Responsibilities
- Networking and identifying reliable information sources on labor trafficking and specific cases/individuals needing assistance;
- Quality victim/witness interviewing, gathering other evidence and data on cases, and building trust with and support from victims of labor trafficking leading to the development of a high volume of cases for further investigation;
- Case file preparation and analysis of the legal elements of TIP to produce excellent cases for IJM or partners to refer to the Cambodian government for intervention;
- Collaboration with government and non-government partners, both within Cambodia and overseas for effective and timely case intervention and victim assistance;
- Support for legal staff and Cambodian police in tracking down absconding or missing suspects.
Critical Qualities
- Exceptional ability in writing, storytelling and editing;
- Photography and video clip shooting skills;
- Excellent translation skills;
- Good grasp of digital media – news site, websites, blogs, FB, Instagram and Twitter;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Exceptional follow-through and accountability for results.
- Disciplined with priorities, excellent time management and ability to work effectively under deadline pressures;
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as under supervision and as part of a team;
- Excellent interpersonal skills in a cross-cultural environment;
- Professional presentation in demeanor and written and oral communication;
- Passionate commitment to and understanding of IJM’s mission, vision and values.
