Casework Lead (Lawyer)


The Need

The Casework Lead is responsible for managing, directly and through other service providers, support for investigations, prosecutions and related victim care in cases of human trafficking in Myanmar. The Casework Lead will liaise with government officials and legal and aftercare professionals in order to secure justice for victims of forced labour and human trafficking crimes and hold perpetrators accountable. She or he will set a standard of excellent preparation and performance, hard work, empathy, and the highest ethical standards. The qualified candidate will be a smart, motivated, analytical, and talented high-achieving Burmese lawyer with 5-7 years’ experience of legal practice in criminal court, a corporate legal department or as a litigator at a private law firm or NGO. The successful candidate will have exceptional written and spoken English and Burmese language skills and a passion to protect the poor and vulnerable from violence by using their legal skills. The position is based in Yangon, Myanmar and may require travel within Myanmar and regionally. This position reports to the Director of Operations, Myanmar.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with prosecutors, court officials, lawyers, police officers and NGOs with whom IJM Myanmar can partner in forced labor exploitation and human trafficking;
  • Identify, develop and manage a set of lawyers willing to support victims in cases of human trafficking and to advise IJM and other NGOs on case referrals;
  • Advise and assist IJM Myanmar’s survivor care program on legal matters pertaining to effective care of victims of trafficking;
  • Provide training to government authorities and other IJM Myanmar partners on legal issues related to forced labor and human trafficking offenses, laws and criminal procedure.

Required Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Law preferred (L.L.M.);
  • Bachelor’s degree in Law from an accredited Myanmar university required;
  • License to practice law in Myanmar preferred;
  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience practicing law in criminal court, a corporate legal department or as a litigator at a private law firm or NGO.

Technical Competencies

  • Effective communication that enhances productivity and facilitates positive workplace relationships;
  • Proven track record in budget management;
  • Strong research, writing and verbal communication skills in English and Burmese.

Non-Technical Competencies

  • Resilient and works well under stress with a sustained positive attitude;
  • Proven ability to lead cross-culturally to achieve significant outcomes and impact;
  • Strong leadership, management and coaching ability with high level of emotional intelligence; and
  • Ability to mitigate conflict or disagreement in a professional manner.
