Director of Operations

Myanmar

The Need

The Director of Operations (DO) is responsible for the start-up and overall execution of operations for IJM in Myanmar. The DO will ensure employee engagement, safety, security, and professional development. This position will also monitor and control the budget, expenditure, and program activities to ensure staff performance and achievement of program goals across the program. The DO will coordinate closely with IJM regional leadership and represent the organization in external engagement with government, corporate, and nongovernmental stakeholders. The DO will build and lead a culture of world-class professional excellence within the field team as well as with external partners.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Establish IJM’s permanent operational presence in Myanmar, building trusted relationships with relevant government leaders and ensuring local legal compliance and organizational governance;
  • Lead the Myanmar office team and implementing partners to successfully equip and empower government and civil society actors to provide tangible relief and restoration to victims of abuse, bring perpetrators to account under the law, and ensure criminal justice systems effectively and sustainably protect the poor from human trafficking;
  • Model and provide leadership in the areas of staff care & resilience, staff safety and security, and staff development resulting in increased employee satisfaction and overall team performance;
  • Build strategic and complementary partnerships that further IJM’s Myanmar and Asia Pacific Regional program strategies; and
  • Prove through data, develop and disseminate IJM’s best practice, lessons learned and model to combat human trafficking through criminal justice system intervention.

Required Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in management, international development, law, social work or equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in law, or an in-depth understanding of forced labor slavery and justice system responses;
  • At least 5 years’ experience designing, monitoring and evaluating international development programs; or at least 5 years’ experience designing strategies and processes to achieve aggressive goals;
  • At least 5 years’ experience successfully leading and managing teams of professionals; experience managing international and/or cross-cultural teams; and
  • Previous experience working in an international organization.

Technical Competencies

  • Effective communication that enhances productivity and facilitates positive workplace relationships;
  • Proven track record in budget management;
  • Strong research, writing and verbal communication skills in English; Myanmar language skills preferred.

Non-Technical Competencies

  • Resilient and works well under stress with a sustained positive attitude;
  • Proven ability to lead cross-culturally to achieve significant outcomes and impact;
  • Strong leadership, management and coaching ability with high level of emotional intelligence; and
  • Ability to mitigate conflict or disagreement in a professional manner.
