The Need

After almost 25 years of continued growth and operational success in pioneering the work of protecting those who are experiencing poverty from violence, IJM has become a $100+ million organization. As IJM continues this trajectory of growth and scaling of its impact, with the Vision to protect 500 million people by the year 2030, IJM is seeking a Sr. Lead for Communications for the Latin America Region.

The Regional Communications Sr. Lead, Latin America will guide the regional communications strategy to ensure Latin America produces compelling storytelling that fuels the global movement, amplifies our program impact, increases revenue, and grows IJM’s brand recognition, voice and partnerships. The role supports and collaborates with IJM local communications teams across the region, and will also collaborate with IJM’s Global Brand & Communications team to ensure a smooth pipeline of storytelling and messaging from IJM Latin America, engagement with global and cross-regional creative content, messaging, resources, learnings, and campaigns, and maintain regional compliance and collaboration with Global policies, guidance and efforts.

This position may be based in either Bogotá, Colombia; Guatemala City, Guatemala; San Salvador, El Salvador; or Lima, Perú; and reports to the Regional Officer, Advocacy and Partnerships.


  • Develop and manage Latin America’s regional Communications and Marketing strategy, including identifying key objectives, performance indicators, clarifying responsibilities of various communication teams across the region, resource or capacity needs, risks and opportunities;
  • Provide dotted line consultation and support to Communications leaders in each of the region’s Country Offices and/or Hubs;
  • With key Latin America leaders, continually assess external regional opportunities, threats, geo-political and other considerations in light of IJM’s 2030 Vision, as it relates to the Communications function;
  • Ensure efficient breaking news and story pipeline across Latin America to support Country offices in getting news up and out to the rest of IJM;
  • Manage media, advocacy initiatives or other key engagements for the region, cross-regional or global collaborations, in support of Program needs when Regional level support is needed;
  • Work with Global Brand & Communications and Latin America Country offices to set the annual content/communications calendar, monitor requests and projects for the Latin America region, support country offices in making hard communications-related decisions, act as single communications liaison point to Global Brand & Communications or other Regions on regional-level or general needs;
  • Lead Regional-level projects such as Brand Regionalization, setting up new country office communications teams and resources, etc;
  • Manage Crisis Communications, brand or risk issues, in partnership with country offices if relevant;
  • Cultivate and manage media and creative partners, when not owned by a country office;
  • Provide orientation, consultation and guidance to new communications staff across the region on Global Brand, Story, and other policies/guidance; and
  • Conduct assessments and then ensure Latin America communications teams are on track, resourced appropriately, addressing barriers or needs, and capacitated to succeed in their roles.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing or a related field;
  • 5-7 years of professional experience leading a regional-level or multi-national Communications team and strategy, including managing media engagement, writing and editing, Brand management, marketing, and other Communications components;
  • Experience with non-governmental/non-profit, human rights and/or development agencies, preferred;
  • Experience directly managing a team of communication professionals, creative agency partners and contracts, as well as coach and support communication professionals without direct line authority;
  • Superb verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, with proven expertise in clearly communicating complex ideas for diverse audiences; in both English and Spanish;
  • Experience working with international media, brand management, and crafting responses, statements, talking points, and/or press releases; and
  • Experience working in a humanitarian work context, with demonstrated trauma-informed interviewing skills and a survivor-protection approach, preferred.

Additional Information:

This role does not provide an international expatriate benefits package therefore it is open for nationals or residents who have the legal capacity to live and work either in Guatemala City, Guatemala; San Salvador, El Salvador; Bogotá, Colombia; or Lima, Perú.

This position requires occasional travel to Latin America, United States, or other regions; candidates must demonstrate their ability to fulfill legal and health requirements to travel to those countries. Travel may last up to approximately 2 weeks at a time.
