MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES – This week, a cycle of violence ended in Manila: After years of violent, hidden abuse, a man has been convicted of child abuse and rape, and sentenced to what will amount to a life term in prison. He started sexually assaulting his granddaughter Jemma* when she was barely a teenager – and had been abusing her mother and grandmother for years.
IJM advocates represented Jemma in a trial that lasted four years. Jemma, her mother and grandmother all bravely chose to testify against the man who had abused three generations of women in the family. When the trial ended, Jemma’s mother and grandmother were in tears, grateful that justice has now been done. They asked IJM attorneys to fight for other girls, as they had for Jemma.
Jemma now lives with her parents in a safe and loving home. She attends regular therapy sessions with other young women who are survivors of sexual abuse and continues to receive support from IJM.
