Throughout the legal process, the family faced multiple roadblocks, including threats to their safety and an uphill battle in the Bolivian justice system. However, they and the team were determined to seek justice for Irene.*

The uncle’s abusive acts were first discovered by Irene’s brother, 12-year-old Federico* who reported what he saw to his mother.

A Los Angeles federal court handed down the life imprisonment sentence on Monday, May 18, following a lengthy, eight-year battle in the courts to prosecute Stanley Reczko under the PROTECT Act. The PROTECT Act criminalizes sexual abuse of children by a U.S. citizen in a foreign country.

KOLKATA, INDIA  — Three years ago in a district courtroom outside Kolkata, Maya* stood on the wooden witness stand and boldly shared her story. She declared that the man standing trial had raped and tortured girls trapped in a brothel, threatening them with dire consequences if they refused to obey.
