MUMBAI, INDIA – IJM investigators and local police pressed on through heavy rains Tuesday afternoon down the crisscrossing alleys of a dense Mumbai neighborhood.

It was not familiar territory, not one of the common red-light districts the groups had explored together before. This was a congested community where thousands of impoverished families lived—a slum where three young teenage girls were allegedly being sold for sex by people in their own community.

These traffickers were found guilty of holding 17 women and girls – some as young as 13 – in a high-end bar where they were exploited for sex, until IJM and local authorities rescued them in August 2012.
