IJM Kenya: After A Year And A Day In Prison, Joseph Is Finally Declared Innocent

NAIROBI, KENYA – Today, after spending exactly one year and one day in prison for a crime he had not committed, Joseph was set free.

Last year, Joseph stepped off a matutu – a mini-bus used for public transportation – and stepped into some kind of public brawl. Suddenly, Joseph was hit by a stone. The next thing he knew, the man who threw the rock was accusing Joseph of stealing his phone. Police nearby overheard, and suddenly the mob turned on Joseph. Joseph still had no idea what was going on.

IJM Kenya: Two Innocent Men Set Free After Three Months in Prison

NAIROBI, KENYA – Yesterday, two innocent men were set free from prison. Three months ago, they were arrested upon a vague suspicion that they might commit a crime in the future. Though they were not charged with a specific crime, they were sent to prison.

Without evidence, they languished in prison for three months. Without an advocate, they would likely remain in prison for months to come.

IJM heard about their story and went to the prison to meet the innocent men. One of IJM Kenya's lawyers advocated for their release, and the men – both fathers – were set free.

After 75 Days in Prison, Two Innocent Men are Set Free in Kenya

NAIROBI, KENYA – On April 18, two innocent men were set free after spending 75 days in prison – though they were never charged with an actual crime.

The chief police inspector told the court he was investigating a series of crimes, but didn’t have sufficient evidence to charge suspects. With the inspector’s unproven suspicions as the only evidence, Shadrack and Joseph were thrown in prison. The only way out was to post bail – about $1,200 – an impossible amount for the impoverished men.
