MUMBAI, INDIA – Late last week, IJM helped police and a specialized anti-trafficking unit rescue young women trafficked for sex from a particularly notorious neighborhood, known for its highly protected criminal activity. The successful rescue operation ended months of investigation, indicating that a couple had been trafficking girls from Bangladesh and selling them to men in Mumbai for sex. Three suspects were arrested that night, and IJM will support a case to ensure the suspected traffickers are held accountable according to Indian laws against sex trafficking.
CEBU, THE PHILIPPINES – Last week, IJM helped local police rescue half a dozen young women trafficked for sex. Several of the women are young mothers, and a few are still in school while trying to provide for children. All are extremely poor. As they shared their stories with IJM staff, they explained how the pimps who trafficked them were taking advantage of very desperate needs.
CHENNAI, INDIA – Late last week, seven men and women were set free from forced labor slavery in a village a few hours outside of Chennai. They were forced to make bricks and cut trees, extremely hard manual labor in exchange for pennies that weren't even enough to purchase food. They were trapped in modern-day slavery.
KOLKATA, INDIA – A 16-year-old girl was running down a residential street just outside Kolkata. She looked desperate, but determined. Neighbors stopped her, and asked her why she was running. She told them she was running away. She said was running from the woman who was chasing her, the madam who she said had held her captive for the past two months in her home.
