CHENNAI, INDIA – Earlier this year, India's most prestigious law school invited IJM Chennai to educate undergraduate and postgraduate students on forced labor slavery. A handful of India University's National Law School students, specializing in criminal rights, human rights and business, enrolled in this five-day, credit course led by IJM lawyers.
MUMBAI, INDIA – Gita* knew something was wrong when she found two girls huddled together, asleep in the stairwell of her apartment building. They seemed to be alone, and it was unclear how they had arrived in her building.
Gita herself had come to Mumbai as a 12-year-old orphan, and she knew what kind of trouble could come their way.
A Providential Call for Intervention
BANGALORE, INDIA—Slavery steals dignity from its victims. But earlier this year, an incredible ceremony celebrated the dignity and value of more than one hundred survivors of forced labor slavery. In the first "graduation" ceremony held by IJM Bangalore's aftercare team, laughing children, proud fathers, and mothers dressed in their finest saris came together to celebrate two years of healing and restoration.
MUMBAI, INDIA – Karishma* left her home in Bangladesh less than one month ago. She thought she had met a man who would love her and give her a new life as his wife. A better life. But the farther they travelled from home, the more uncertain Karishma's future became.
On July 4, IJM Mumbai and local police helped rescue Karishma from a brothel. She had been initiated just the night before. She shuddered as she told how one man had raped her, preparing her for the customers who were scheduled to start arriving that very day.
A Cruel Initiation
