The IJM Australia Advancement Office was established in 2014 to fuel IJM’s global mission by mobilising Australians’ resources and influence to protect people living in poverty from violence.

The Need

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50% and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Accountant.

This position can be based in Sydney or Greater Sydney, Australia, and reports to the Director of Finance & Compliance. This can be a part-time or full-time work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately entering financial transactions into accounting software, ensuring all data is current and correct, and utilising tools like Salesforce and QuickBooks to validate and cross-check data.
  • Cross-referencing financial records with bank statements and source documents to ensure accuracy, identifying and rectifying discrepancies to maintain financial integrity.
  • Recording and processing donations in line with regulatory requirements, IJM policies and supporter expectations.
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate records to comply with audit standards and finance best practices including monthly reconciliations.
  • Managing accounts payable and receivable tasks, including processing invoices and payments promptly, monitoring outstanding receivables, and following up to ensure timely payments.
  • Managing the Accounts Payable Supplier Ledger including names, addresses, ABN & GST status checking, bank account details, payment terms, and IJM Watchdog Vendor Vetting.
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to implement and improve finance processes, providing recommendations to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Safeguarding the confidentiality and security of financial and supporter information, adhering to organisational policies and regulations.
  • Assisting the Department Head with general accounting and financial reporting tasks, as required, including regular budget vs. actual management report and create and maintain accurate process documentation.
  • Assisting in other job tasks within Finance & Compliance team.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience, preferably in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, word)
  • Experience in general accounting and bookkeeping, as well as expense and Accounts Payable ledger management.
  • Good understanding of accounting principles and practices.
  • Holds a professional qualification in accounting (Diploma, Certificate or Degree in Accounting, Business or Finance) is desirable.
  • Experience with Australian regulatory compliance and reporting frameworks for NGOs is desirable.
  • Experience in a fundraising or not for profit environment is desirable.
