FUNDRAISER SPOTLIGHT

When teenage philanthropist Sophia learned about IJM’s fight against modern-day slavery, she was shocked. She had no idea how prevalent the issue was around the world. She wanted to do something to help, and IJM’s first-ever virtual Race to Rescue in the US in 2020 became the perfect opportunity. After raising her voice on social media and inspiring her friends and family to join her, she went on to raise more than $8,000 USD—becoming one of IJM's top fundraisers!

Threads, a pop-up thrift shop initiative, gives students at college campuses a fun way to rally their community and raise funds to fight modern-day slavery by collecting clothing donations, setting up a temporary shop, and donating the proceeds to support IJM’s work. In 2020, the Anderson University IJM chapter hosted their event at an art gallery on campus. Caroline Mason, IJM chapter president, recalls, “We had incredible support from our campus community. I will never forget looking out the door on the day of Threads to see about 40 people lined up, just waiting for our thrift shop to open. Our chapter had never seen so much excitement for an IJM event before. Over the course of a few hours, more than 200 people stopped by the shop.”

Every year, a Wisconsin community comes together to swim laps and raise money for IJM through a local youth swim-a-thon. Since its inception in 2016, Freedom Swim has raised over $200k for IJM. But in March 2020 when COVID-19 swept through the globe, closing the community’s pools, the Freedom Swim team pivoted their energy toward innovative approaches. From individual swim teams running laps around a track, to families swimming in their own pools, to teams continuing their fundraisers, this group of kids stepped out of their comfort zones and remained dedicated to a cause bigger than themselves. Event organizer Ellen Blust recalls: “I was really blessed to see how everybody else was like, ‘No, let's do this in a different way.’ And they rallied and made it happen in their own way.” Even though the event was “canceled,” the Freedom Swim community still raised over $70,000 for IJM’s work ending global slavery.
